Project: The Black Shin League – Nacional Soccer League From Porto Alegre in the Early 1910s. Accomplished with funds from the edict CONCURSO CULTURA 2014 – Ministry of Culture

Adriana Xaplin presents her visual arts exhibition entitled THE BLACK SHIN LEAGUE – PORTO ALEGRE 1910, because Brazil is sovereign, free, lives under a democratic regime and, for the first time in its five hundred years of existence, with a woman in charge of the presidency, there will be an opportunity to expand and make internationally visible a set of actions with the goal of evoking part of the African Brazilian community’s memory. We can say that our people possesses an Universal DNA, because many ethnicities with their most different phenotypes derived from many parts of the planet have been combined to build the matrix of the Brazilian people. Therefore we descend from native Indians, black African people, Italian-European Germanics, Indo-Asians or Oceanic-Easterns. A great sum of hope, adventure and free will.  This way, as a receiving nation of so many heritages and ancestries, there is a search for the acknowledgement of freedom and equality. On the year of 2014, we are hosting the greatest worldwide event, which involves the passion and fascination for soccer, present in the hearts of many Brazilians. Porto Alegre pumping the energy of the 30th parallel south, where it is located, is one of the cities that will host this great reconciliation towards the ball and, inside this context, is presented the exhibition of this visual artist from Porto Alegre, compromised with the visibility of the foundation of our culture, exhibiting her work on the main museum in Rio Grande do Sul in what concerns the appreciation of our roots.

The exhibition “The Black Shin League – National Soccer League from Porto Alegre in the Early 1910s”, by the sculptress Adriana Xaplin, evokes through a  strong and striking poetic the history of the people that crossed the ocean against their will and under extreme conditions and even so helped to build the identity of this Porto Alegre full of times and places under blood, sweat and tears, having as a background the passion for soccer and the strength of the self affirmation of the black and mulatto people, excluded from sports. The “National Soccer League from Porto Alege”, or Black Shin League, would make the opposition to the racism that was happening in the elite clubs in Porto Alegre in the beginning of the 1910 decade.

In the installation the audience will find a golden boot for a barefoot and a fire ball for players that do not fear the flames of exclusion. Raw cloths painted, outlined and stretched throughout the walls and floor to be seen and stepped on with respect and dignity dedicated to a work of art. All of this summed to a sculpture of an iron made human figure, with the forms extremely marked by the weight of the history and strength of these warrior players.

Project The Black Shin League – National Soccer League From Porto Alegre on the early 1910s.

By Lucas Strey

Memory and identity are inextricably linked. The formation of our identity is a result of the life path, history, myth and narrative we experience, build, or evoke. Art, as foundation of human knowledge, acts as a fundamental factor of reflection and consolidation of self awareness. In order to do that, it sometimes calls upon memory as a source of inspiration, and when it does that, it not only tells a story or recalls facts through a form of language; more than that, art represents the images of time materialized in a poetic of experiences that invites the individual to go beyond the facts lying on his memory.

The work of Adriana Xaplin has this power of evoking and construction. Through a strong and striking poetic, it evokes the forces of the people who crossed the ocean against their will and under extreme conditions and even so helped build the identity of a nation under blood, sweat and tears, having as a background the passion for soccer and the strength of the self affirmation of the black and mulatto people, excluded from sports. The works take the installation, articulate within themselves and link the past and present by a tightrope, generating on the audience a sensation of instability before the memory. In order not to fall during the path you must free yourself of prejudice and live the experience with your body, mind and spirit.
